Background of the study
This study assesses the influence of policy-driven initiatives on language innovation in the Efik language among youth in Calabar. Amid rapid technological advancements and evolving cultural dynamics, language policies have increasingly focused on fostering innovation and adaptability within indigenous languages (Inyang, 2023). In Calabar, efforts to integrate modern linguistic trends with traditional Efik have led to new forms of expression, especially among young people who are active on social media and digital platforms. These policies encourage creative language use in digital communications, advertising, and informal educational settings, aiming to make Efik more relevant to contemporary audiences. However, this innovation presents both opportunities and challenges, as it often leads to variations in language use and potential dilution of standardized forms. The study employs surveys, focus group discussions, and analysis of digital content to evaluate how policy measures are influencing linguistic creativity and identity among Efik-speaking youth. It further explores whether these innovations support or undermine efforts at language preservation and standardization (Inyang, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Despite policy-driven initiatives promoting language innovation in Efik, challenges persist in balancing creativity with standardization. Youth-driven adaptations, while enriching the language, sometimes diverge from conventional norms, leading to confusion and potential erosion of traditional language forms (Inyang, 2023). Moreover, there is limited empirical data on how these innovative practices impact long-term language proficiency and cultural preservation. This study seeks to identify these issues and examine the extent to which policy interventions have successfully fostered a creative yet coherent linguistic environment among Efik-speaking youth in Calabar.

Objectives of the study:

To assess the impact of policy initiatives on Efik language innovation among youth.

To identify challenges in maintaining language standardization amid innovation.

To recommend strategies for balancing creativity with preservation.

Research questions:

How have policy initiatives influenced Efik language innovation among youth?

What challenges arise from divergent language practices?

What measures can ensure innovation without compromising standardization?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the effects of policy-driven language innovation on the Efik language among youth in Calabar. The findings will provide insights for policymakers and educators to fine-tune strategies that encourage creative expression while preserving linguistic heritage. By addressing the balance between innovation and standardization, the study contributes to sustainable language development and cultural continuity (Inyang, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to assessing policy-driven language innovation in Efik among youth in Calabar, focusing on digital content and language use trends.

Definitions of terms:

Language innovation: The introduction of new linguistic forms and expressions.

Standardization: The establishment of consistent language norms.

Digital communication: The exchange of information through digital platforms.
